my WERQ story
In 2021, while juggling graduate school, work, and personal life, I realized I needed a more sustainable way to take care of myself; something that didn’t feel like just another item on my to-do list. I could feel burnout creeping in and knew something had to shift.
That’s when I discovered WERQ Dance Fitness. I signed up not knowing a single person in the class and walked in with zero dance experience. I remember stepping into the gym feeling nervous, alone, and unsure. But as soon as the instructor pressed play, something shifted. I could feel the stress begin to leave my body and in its place, joy started to take root.
After that first class, I immediately looked up how to become an instructor. What drew me in was more than just the music and movement, it was the emphasis on joy, community, and showing up exactly as you are. WERQ became a way to recharge rather than deplete my energy, and it’s a gift I’m so grateful to now share with others.

the power of dance

mind-body connection
I often witness how emotional experiences live not just in our thoughts, but in our bodies. The mind-body connection is a crucial, yet sometimes overlooked, aspect of mental health. Stress, trauma, and anxiety can manifest physically, just as physical practices like breathwork, movement, or somatic awareness can support emotional regulation and healing. When we learn to tune into the body’s signals, we gain access to deeper self-understanding and resilience. True healing often begins when we stop viewing the mind and body as separate and start listening to the wisdom of both.

emotional regulation
From a therapeutic perspective, dance is more than self-expression, it’s a powerful form of emotional regulation. Movement engages the nervous system, supports the release of stored tension, and helps individuals reconnect with their bodies in a safe, embodied way. Rhythmic movement, like dance, can activate calming pathways in the brain, promoting a sense of grounding and presence. For many people, especially those who struggle to articulate emotions verbally, dance offers an alternative route to process, express, and shift difficult feelings.
social connection
I often emphasize the importance of connection in mental health and dance offers a unique way to build it. Whether in a class, a community event, or a spontaneous moment of shared movement, dance creates opportunities for social engagement that feel joyful and low-pressure. It fosters a sense of belonging, encourages nonverbal communication, and can reduce feelings of isolation. Especially for those who struggle with social anxiety or have experienced disconnection, dance provides a structured yet expressive space to reconnect with others and with themselves. In many ways, dance helps us remember we’re not alone.
